10th day: Sunday, 26 Sep 2004: Putting together the roof - part 1 (ca. 8 hours)

Joe had time again today and came by to help. We produced the first half of the roof structure. Remember: One M-truss was done one week ago, yesterday I produced the parts for another five trusses. Here you can see how they were put together.

This actually was on Friday... I picked up the aluminum U profile which will serve as a a rail for the roof . I bought four profiles, each of them 5 m long. This is how I drove through Noordwijkerhout to get them home.

I used the first two roof trusses as a template. I fixed vertical logs with clamps to them and put the wood for the next trusses on top before screwing them together. This will guarantee that all of them areidentical.

Joe drills the holes in the aluminum rail. They have to be countersunk to ensure that the wheels don't run into screw heads. Joe does this with a drill press.

The mass production is finished - six roof trusses, four of them with wheels.

That's where he enounters a problem: The wood is not straight (any more?). If we were to mount the rail straight, it would not follow the wood. We decide to let it follow the wood and see what happens...

One of the wheels and its attachement to the roof truss. We added a piece of wood to the main strut so that the wheel has a proper mounting surface.

The first half of the roof structure in the process of being mounted together. It is not clear to us how we can do this and ensure that everything is under the proper angle. We simply mount it together hoping it is ok... The idea is to mount the roof in two halves "on the ground", get it up on the walls, then fix it together. This is where we have to stop for today.
